Anand Karaj Cost Guide · 2026

How much does a gurdwara wedding (Anand Karaj) cost?

A gurdwara does not sell the Anand Karaj, and there is no fixed fee anywhere in the world. The ceremony is seva — selfless service offered by the sangat — and what your family gives back is also seva, in the spirit of dasvandh. In practice, most gurdwaras today do suggest a donation when you book, because they carry real costs: the Granthi, the Ragi jatha, langar for everyone present, and hall upkeep.

So the honest answer to “how much does it cost?” is: there is no price — there is a suggested donation range that varies widely by gurdwara, country, guest count and what's included. The ranges below are what couples commonly report; always ask your own gurdwara committee directly, early, and clearly.

Suggested donation ranges by country

These are community-reported donation ranges, not published fees — most gurdwaras don't post a schedule, and the amount you give is between you and the committee. What's bundled in (especially langar) varies enormously, so the headline figure isn't comparable between gurdwaras without asking what it covers.

USA (USD)
Plus a Ragi jatha offering often $200–$500 separately. Most US gurdwaras don't publish a figure; one (Charlotte, NC) lists an $1,100 total including kirtan bheta. Ask your gurdwara. Source: RSVP'd / Charlotte Gurdwara

What the donation usually covers — and what's extra

At most large gurdwaras the donation covers the core of the ceremony. What's bundled versus extra is the single most important thing to confirm, because two gurdwaras can quote similar amounts where one includes full langar for 400 guests and the other doesn't.

  • Usually included: use of the Darbar Sahib for the ceremony, the Granthi to conduct the Anand Karaj and Ardas, the resident Ragi jatha for kirtan during the Laavan, Karah Parshad, and langar for the sangat present.
  • Commonly extra or variable: outside catering or extended langar for large numbers, civil legal registration, elaborate palki or hall floral decor, a non-member surcharge at some gurdwaras, in-house or approved videography, and post-event cleaning.

Why the amount varies so much

Four things move the number, and none of them is a price list:

  • What's bundled. The biggest variable by far — a figure that includes langar for 400 guests is not comparable to one that doesn't.
  • Gurdwara size and location. A large urban gurdwara serving 500+ guests carries higher operating costs than a small suburban one; reported ranges in the same city differ 2–3×.
  • Whether the Ragi jatha is included. The resident jatha is usually covered; inviting an outside jatha often needs approval and a separate offering.
  • Day and date. Weekday dates are easier to book, but most gurdwaras suggest the same donation regardless of day — the saving is availability, not a different rate.

The mistakes that quietly cost you money

Most wasted spend around the ceremony comes from a handful of avoidable errors:

  1. Paying for the meal twice. Langar is served to all guests after the ceremony at most large gurdwaras. Booking a separate 'lunch reception' an hour later means serving the same meal twice — the most common unnecessary cost in the whole budget.
  2. Assuming a fixed fee and not asking. Most gurdwaras don't publish a schedule. Couples who don't call either assume 'it's free' or invent a number online. Ask the committee for the full guidance and what it covers.
  3. Not confirming whether the Ragi offering is separate. At some gurdwaras it's included; at others a $200–$500+ offering to the jatha is standard. And at most, any offering is given through the gurdwara treasurer, not handed directly to individuals.
  4. Booking a palki decorator the gurdwara won't allow. Palki Sahib decoration is entirely at the gurdwara's discretion — some prohibit external decorators, some have approved suppliers. Confirm the policy before booking any vendor.
  5. Booking too late. Popular summer-weekend dates at large gurdwaras book 12–18 months ahead. The gurdwara date should be locked before any other supplier.

One thing that isn't about money: the ceremony must be in a gurdwara

As of a formal directive reaffirmed in 2025, the Anand Karaj must be conducted inside a gurdwara — not a farmhouse, hotel, resort or destination venue. This doesn't change the cost, but it removes any question of a 'venue alternative': the ceremony is at the gurdwara, and the reception is held separately wherever you choose.

For the authoritative meaning of the four Laavan and anything about the ceremony itself, your Granthi is the best source, and SikhRI and SikhiToTheMax.org are well-regarded public references.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to get married at a gurdwara?

There is no single answer — it depends on the gurdwara, country, guest count and what's bundled in. In the Greater Toronto Area, the all-in donation (including langar for 300–500 guests) commonly runs CAD $2,000–$6,000+. In the UK the combined contribution is usually £1,000–£3,300. In the USA the core gurdwara donation is often cited at USD $500–$2,000, with the Ragi offering sometimes separate. The only reliable number is the one your specific gurdwara gives you when you call.

Is there a fixed fee for the Anand Karaj?

No. The Anand Karaj is not a service you purchase — it's a sacred ceremony offered as seva, and your family's contribution is seva too. Most gurdwaras will suggest a donation when you book, because they need to cover real costs, but there is no fixed religious fee and the amount is ultimately between you and the committee.

What's included in the gurdwara donation?

At most large gurdwaras: use of the Darbar Sahib, the Granthi's time for the ceremony and Ardas, the resident Ragi jatha for kirtan during the Laavan, Karah Parshad, and langar for your guests. Not usually included: elaborate floral palki decor, outside catering, civil registration and any non-member surcharge. Always confirm the full list with your gurdwara.

Do you pay or tip the Ragis separately?

Sometimes. The Ragi jatha offering may be included in the main donation or separate — ask explicitly. Where separate, a common range is USD $200–$500. Importantly, at most gurdwaras any offering should be given through the gurdwara treasurer, not handed directly to individuals.

Can we decorate the palki Sahib?

It's entirely at the gurdwara's discretion. Palki Sahib — where Guru Granth Sahib Ji rests — is treated with the highest reverence. Some gurdwaras have their own arrangement and allow no changes; others work with approved decorators. Ask your committee before booking any decorator, and don't assume a vendor you found online is approved for your gurdwara.

Is a weekday Anand Karaj cheaper than a weekend?

Usually not in the donation itself — most gurdwaras suggest the same amount regardless of day. What a weekday buys you is availability and less pressure to book far ahead, and your reception venue (if you have one) may offer lower mid-week rates. Ask your gurdwara whether they differentiate weekday and weekend.
